For the love of fire

I began working with clay in high school and have spent more than thirty-five years exploring and teaching ceramic processes, with a focus on atmospheric firing. My work centers on the relationship between clay and fire—where heat, timing, and material interact in ways that reward patience and experience. Growing up and living in Central Minnesota, shaped by forests, water, and long seasons, informs both my process and aesthetic.

After nearly fifteen years working in raku and barrel firing, I moved into wood and soda firing to carry that same energy into functional work. These long firings allow fire to remain an active collaborator, building surfaces through ash, vapor, and shifting atmospheres. Each piece is shaped by both hand and kiln, resulting in pots made for daily use that reflect the warmth and weathered character of the northwoods.
